How to Prepare for Your Counselling Consultation

Starting counseling can be a significant step in your mental health journey. At the HealthMind clinic, all of our counsellors offer a complimentary 20-minute consultation as an opportunity for you to get to know your potential new counsellor, assess if they’re the right fit for you, and address any concerns or questions you might have. To make the most of this appointment, it’s helpful to prepare some key questions that can guide the session and set the tone for your therapy experience.

1. What is your therapeutic approach?

Counsellors can ground their work in a variety of theoretical orientations, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, or somatic or body-based practices. Understanding your counsellor’s approach can help you determine if their style aligns with your preferences. While you are not expected to be an expert on these models or to name which ones you prefer to work with, it can be helpful for your counsellor to understand, for example, if you prefer structured sessions with actionable goals, or perhaps value self-exploration and pursuit of insight into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. They will be able to assess how your preferences align with their ways of working.

2. What experience do you have with my specific issues?

If you’re seeking therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, or any other specific concern, it’s important to know if the counsellor has experience in that area. Asking about their practice background can give you confidence that they are equipped to address your needs. Some counsellors might also have training in trauma-informed care or experience working with marginalized communities, which could be important based on your personal circumstances.

3. What can I expect from therapy?

The therapy process can vary greatly depending on the individual and the counsellor. Asking about what to expect can clarify session frequency, treatment duration, and how progress is typically tracked. Understanding, for example, whether your counselor uses homework assignments, a more structured or more fluid session structure, or the types of interventions used in initial sessions will help you set realistic expectations for the process.

4. How will we measure progress?

Measuring progress in therapy is essential for both you and your counsellor. Ask how they typically evaluate improvements or setbacks. Some therapists use formal assessments, while others may rely on regular conversations about how you’re feeling. Knowing how progress will be tracked can help you stay motivated and feel confident that the therapy is working.

5. What are your confidentiality policies?

Therapy sessions are meant to be a safe space, and it’s important to ask about confidentiality, particularly if you’re discussing sensitive information. Understanding your counsellor’s privacy policies can help you feel more comfortable opening up during sessions. There are exceptions to confidentiality, such as if the counselor believes you or someone else is in danger, or when you are working with an intern therapist who is receiving supervision, so it’s helpful to clarify these boundaries upfront.

6. What do you expect from me as a client?

The therapist-client relationship is a partnership, and both parties have responsibilities. Asking what your counselor expects from you, such as attendance, active participation, or doing homework assignments, can help you prepare and commit to the process. This also gives you a sense of how engaged and involved you’ll need to be for therapy to be effective.

7. How can I contact you outside of sessions?

Therapists have different policies about communication outside of scheduled sessions. Some allow brief emails or phone calls, while others might prefer all communication to take place during appointments. Clarifying this can prevent misunderstandings and help you know what to do if an urgent issue arises between sessions.

Final Thoughts

Your first consultation is an important opportunity to build a foundation of trust and understanding with your new counsellor. By asking thoughtful questions, you can assess if the therapist is the right fit for you and set clear expectations for your therapy journey. Don’t hesitate to be open and honest during this appointment—it’s the first step toward building a therapeutic relationship that supports your mental health.
