Steve Conway

With over thirty years experience, beginning in community based social services and then two decades as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and most recently as an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), my career is deeply rooted in the field of counselling therapy. I hold a Doctor of Psychology and have dedicated over thirteen years to teaching with City University’s Master of Counselling program. In my previous leadership roles as the Canadian Director of the program and the Vice President of CityU in Canada, I’ve enjoyed contributing to the academic and practical training of future counselling therapists. Furthermore, I established the original CityU Vancouver-based community counselling clinics offering no-cost accessible counselling to underserved members of the community. In this role I guided and supervised CityU interns, helping to shape their clinical skills and professional identity as practicing counselling therapists.  I have also acted as a clinical supervisor and clinical consultant to practicing counselling therapists and counselling clinics.

My practice is anchored in a highly relational, authentic, and collaborative approach, where the therapeutic alliance is the heart of my work with clients. I believe that therapy is a joint venture, one that thrives on active participation from both client and therapist. My role is to walk alongside my client, offering a supportive and empowering partnership that draws out and builds upon their inherent strengths. As a clinical supervisor, I extend this philosophy to my supervisees, fostering a nurturing environment that encourages reflective practice and growth. In my practice, we delve into clinician’s experiences and skills, leveraging them as the groundwork for both personal growth and professional advancement. My strengths-based approach is practical and focused—it recognizes and utilizes existing skills and abilities to help clinicians grow and develop as a counselling therapist.
